WIP... stuff will be broken...
As these vehicles age switches, relays and all manner of electrical components do as well, and to differing but often disastrous result...
In this case the manual switch for the popup mechanism of the headlights has apparently failed and uh, caused them to dance...
The switch was inoperable manually, and only putting the headlights to the on position made them stay up,
In other vehicles I've had similar issues and the lights were either unresponsive with the switch, slow or took a long time to either go up or down
The task is rather simple to complete and should take no more than 10 minutes, all you will need is a small flathead screwdriver and some dielectric grease
This is the switch in question, some of you will also have fog switching on the same module.
Take the small flathead screwdriver and lever it gently in the small gap at the bottom of the switch
It should come up fairly easily
Once it's out this far they typically come out with just fingers
Remove the plug(s) by depressing the small clip inwards towards the base of the connector and then pull gently but firmly
With the switch in your hands, lever the plastic up off the push clips gently while applying wards force on the white insert
This should pop the white piece out to a point, that, by hand you can remote by rolling it and pulling it out
Flipping the 2 case halves over will show the following, yours will probably be worse, I have already roughly scraped most of the crud off.
Essentially though the original grease compound will have solidified into a horrible green/brown hard substance that highly limits contact and increases resistance
Clean all areas circled in red
Once cleaned reassemble with a generous helping of fresh dielectric grease (available from most good auto parts stores)
